An exhibition in Stratford-upon-Avon is gathering together local and national artists who reflect the beauty of our English gardens on a large scale. The exhibition at Retrospectives Gallery called the "Giants of Flora" begins on Monday 5th September through to Sunday 18th September. One of the exhibitors is local Warwickshire artist Kay Elliott who will be presenting some of her supersize floral pieces including 'Oriental Poppies' an enormous watercolour study 40 x 60 inches! Creating on this large scale in watercolour is rare. As Kay explains "it is with some trepidation, nerve and reckless confidence I start to create these pieces. I work spontaneously and try to convey my excitement in an observational but contemporary way. I am aiming for the wow factor and thoroughly enjoy the challenge of capturing the richness and depth of the colours combined with the delicacy of the petals and complexity of the flower structure - like soft architecture. My work has been likened to that of Dame Elizabeth Blackadder R.A., which is a huge compliment, but I am not influenced by anyone's work.' Another artist presenting is Susanne Clark who creates beautifully lyrical abstract flowers in acrylic on canvas. She also works on a large scale, for example her 'Lily Form' measures 40 x 32 inches. The Exhibition runs from Monday 5th September to Sunday 18th September and open from 10-5 each day and refreshments are available in the open air courtyard outside the Gallery just opposite Shakespeare's Birthplace. The preview with the artists is on Sunday 4th September-to request an invite please contact the gallery.
